The Strange Case of Yukio Mishima (1987)

Director:
Michael McIntyre

(55 min)

IMDb

"BBC2 Arena documentary, which examines the controversial life and bizarre death of the Japanese author, playwright, actor and patriot, Yukio Mishima, who was nominated three times for the Nobel Prize for literature, and who committed suicide by ritual disembowelment, on 25th November 1970 after attempting a military coup.

Using rare archive footage, including film of Mishima giving a final speech just moments before his death, as well as interviews with the author conducted in English, and reminiscences from his former friends and colleagues, including his English born biographer, Henry Scott Stokes, and translator Donald Keene, the film attempts to shed light on what drove him towards his unusual choice of fate."

Just found out about two The Criterion Collection releases.
Mishima (Criterion Collection) [DVD9] - Apparently this one contains "Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters" the movie, "The Strange Case of Yukio Mishima" documentary, and many more interviews, bonuses aso... Downloading it right now, this will take some time since its very large.

Theres also another release called: "PATRIOTISM - Yukio Mishima and Domoto Masaki". It is a 1966 Japanese short drama film directed by Yukio Mishima and Domoto Masaki. Mishima wrote Yûkoku four years before his death. The book reflected many of Mishima's warlike instincts as it follows the story of the young Japanese army lieutenant Shinji Takeyama (played by Mishima) and his new wife, Reiko (played by Yoshiko Tsuruoka). Mishima's fascination with death and the samurai also come into the book when the lieutenant commits seppuku, the Japanese ritual suicide. The book was a tribute to the emperor and the Ni Ni Roku incident. Patriotism is an example of Mishima's thematic treatment of death, violence and politics.

After Mishima's suicide his widow, Yoko, suppressed the film. However, the original negative was found in 2005 and it was released on DVD by The Criterion Collection in 2008.

Will be looking for this one too... If you find a ripped version of these, let me know. Downloading huge DVD9's is a hassle.
