Sveto Mesto (1990) - with english subtitles

Director:
Djordje Kadijevic

Rivju by Dejan Ognjanović ovde. (90 min)

"Sveto mesto (A Holy Place, 1990) is based on a literary classic, Nikolai Gogol's 1835 short story, 'Viy'. However, Kadijevic uses it only as a starting point for his own explorations into the dark side of eroticism. Gogol's story deals with Toma, a reluctant theology student who is forced to read the Psalms over an (un)dead girl for three nights in a row. All the while supernatural forces are trying to grab him from the Holy Circle drawn on the church floor. Kadijevic adapts and enriches 'Viy' by inventing a new backstory for the witch-girl and her father. The dead girl, Catherine (unwittingly killed in the prologue, while in the shape of a hag), is referred to as a 'saint' and her father is a harsh and unpleasant man. Kadijevic departs further from the original story, and introduces an excess of perversity and horror more reminiscent of the Anglo-American gothic than the milder Slavic attempts in a similar mode. Incest is the name of the game here."

I have never come across Sveto Mesto before and as I am a huge fan of the 1967 Russian adaption of the Gogol story 'Viy' (especially the visual aspect of the film by the great Russian film maker Aleksandr Ptushko, the final scene on the third night is amongst the best couple of minutes in cinematic history in my opinion!)...

Anyway, really looking forward to seeing this and thanks for the English subtitles! There are so many Eastern European sci-fi and fantasy films from Eastern Europe and Russia created during the communist era that have never been subtitled either officially or "fansubs", I have a big folder of films waiting for some kind person to translate into English in a variety of languages!).

Many thanks!

Sveto Mesto was absolutely extraordinary! I cannot thank you enough for sharing all these wonderful examples of Serbian cinema. The films by Djordje Kadijevic should be far more known in the west than they currently are as they are as good as anything ever put out in Europe or America in my opinion.

For English speaking readers there is an excellent interview with the director over at Temple Of Ghoul blog where he discusses the film, the background in terms of myth and mysticism and compares his film to 'Viy' and why he chose a different, less "fantastic" way to tell the Gogol story.

I also found a larger rip (700meg) of the film which includes English/Russian/Spanish subtitles in the RAR file:

There is also a seeded torrent file of the same rip for anyone having difficulties downloading on FS.
