Kenneth Anger - Hollywood Babylon I (1975,PDF)

"Kenneth Anger's trash classic is still worth a look after all these years. No, this is not the book for those tender and naive dears among us who still think "they wouldn't print it if it wasn't true." This is more along the lines of "they couldn't print it if they weren't dead!" Don't look here for an accurate history of Hollywood's Golden Age. What Anger serves up, in his own wasp-tongued way, is the true gossip of the day. True in the sense that it was actually circulated, not that it was accurate. That in itself gives the book its own kind of historical value: the tabloid trash a bygone era. If you've ever lingered over a particularly lurid headline in the supermarket check out line, this book may be for you. Go for it, nobody's looking!"

Kenneth Anger: Film as Magical Ritual (1970)

Director:
Reinhold E. Thiel

"If you’re a Kenneth Anger fan, be prepared to be seriously blown away by this astonishing German television documentary from 1970 that shows the master at work on Lucifer Rising. It’s fun to ponder, as you watch, what the average German must have thought about this film, which doesn’t flinch from presenting some of the most outrageous ideas and imagery ever to be broadcast to an entire (unsuspecting) nation. It’s magnificently freaky stuff.

Not only would this have been the first look the world would get of Anger’s magnum opus (which he is seen shooting Méliès-style in a tiny space) there are substantial excerpts from Fireworks, Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome, Rabbit’s Moon, Puce Moment, and Invocation of My Demon Brother, which showed hash smoking (and cocks!) on TV. It’s impossible to imagine something like this ever getting on television in America 44 years ago, but I don’t think the BBC would have touched something this insane at the time, either.

As filmmaker Reinhold E. Thiel admits in his voiceover, it was Anger directing himself that they got on film. As he states, Anger really wasn’t that into allowing them to film him in the first place, but when he did relent it was on his terms. Anger’s interview segments were shot as he sat behind a makeshift altar, lit in magenta and inside of the magical “war gods” circle seen at the end of the film.

Of special note is we see Anger flipping through his “Puce Women” sketchbook (he’s an excellent illustrator) of his unmade tribute to the female archetypes of Hollywood’s golden era and the architecture of movie star homes (This notebook was on display at the Anger exhibit at MOCA in Los Angeles). Anger is also seen here shooting scenes with his Lucifer, Leslie Huggins (both interior shots in Anger’s makeshift studio and among the stones at Avebury) and with the adept in the war gods circle. Oddly, we can hear what the adept is saying (“Haven’t I seen you somewhere before?”) whereas in the final film he just seems to be muttering something mysterious when Lucifer appears.

Anger discusses his Aleister Crowley-inspired theories of art: How he views his camera like a wand and how he casts his films, preferring to consider his actors, not human beings but as elemental spirits. In fact, he reveals that he goes so far as to use astrology when making these choices.

This is as direct an explanation of Anger’s cinemagical modus operandi as I have ever heard him articulate anywhere. It’s a must see for anyone interested in his work and showcases the Magus of cinema at the very height of his artistic powers. Fascinating."

The Man We Want to Hang (2002)

Director:
Kenneth Anger

Runtime: 13 min

Kenneth Anger o Krouliju. Kad je kultno nek je okultno, i aupičkumaterinu, idemo...

"This film consists of nothing but drawings and paintings done by Crowley. As the camera moves about, you are given no narration or explanation of what you are seeing - unless you listen to the accompanying audio track with Anger himself talking about his film and his love of Crowley. It seems that most of the paintings in the film were owned by Led Zeppelin musician Jimmy Page, though a few others were borrowed from other sources."

Kenneth Anger (1991)

Director:
Nigel Finch

Runtime: 58 min

Kenneth Anger, okultni režiser, jaran Bobija Beausoleila, autor genijalnih eksperimentalnih filmova Invocation of My Demon Brother (1969) i Lucifer Rising (1972), u ovom dokumentarcu nas vodi kroz mračniju stranu Holivuda, kroz skandale, ubistva, samoubistva, pogibije, nerazjašnjene smrti, razvrat, pa i kroz svoje, malo je reći, kontraverzne filmove.

IMDB

"Profile of Kenneth Anger, looking at the uproar his books on Hollywood scandals caused and journeying through the darker side of Hollywood's history, including film clips, and Anger playing a guide with comedian Mike McShane playing the God of Hollywood. It also includes a look at some of Anger's own work."

The Beach Boys and the Satan (1997)

Director:
Christoph Dreher

Runtime: 59 min

"The Beach Boys and Satan is a documentary film made as part of the Pop Odyssee series and directed by music documentary specialist Christoph Dreher. This documentary, in addition to placing The Beach Boys rise to success into context with rarely seen footage of the band, exposes California's darker side and investigates the connections between some of the most controversial characters of that period (Anton La Vey, Kenneth Anger, and Brian Wilson) and their connection to the Manson Family. The film includes interviews with Kim Fowley, Don Was and the creative force behind the Beach Boys, Brian Wilson. There are also archive clips surrounding the trial of Charles Manson and various members of The Family. The film which was originally released in 1997 has been unavailable for some time and this release on DVD will be highly anticipated."

DISINFO.CON (2007)

Naime, Disinfo (The Disinformation Company) je osnovana 1996. godine i bavi se prvenstveno izadavaštvom counter-culture literature, a pojavom interneta počeli su da rade i sajtove pa i dokumentarce, i to baš ozbiljno, npr. oni su izdali Stupidity (2006), Endgame: Blueprint for Global Enslavement (2007), Iraq for Sale: The War Profiteers (2006), 9/11: Press for Truth (2006), pa čak i In Search of the Great Beast 666: Aleister Crowley (2009).

(210 min)

disinfo.com

"This Dual-Layer DVD contains an amazing four hours from The Disinformation Company's massive counterculture event in New York City's Hammerstein Ballroom. Highlights from the now legendary disinfo.Con event include appearances by Robert Anton Wilson, Marilyn Manson, Joe Coleman, Kenneth Anger, Grant Morrison and many more.

New York hadn't seen anything like this since the Nova Convention in 1978; a quarter century later Disinformation's keynote speakers Richard Metzger and Douglas Rushkoff ushered in a dizzying, day-long array of performances ranging from sword-swallowing to sanskrit chanting, interspersed with lectures and conversations with counterculture luminaries. Nothing beats actually experiencing an event like this in the flesh but this DVD comes pretty close to capturing the spirit of the counterculture as we lurch into the 21st century."

FEATURING:
- Kenneth Anger
- Joe Coleman
- Adam Parfrey
- Mark Pesce
- Marilyn Manson
- Richard Metzger
- Grant Morrison
- Douglas Rushkoff
- Robert Anton Wilson
