The Bob Dylan Encyclopedia (PDF)

"The Bob Dylan Encyclopedia is one of the most wide-ranging, informed, entertaining, provocative, and compulsively readable books ever written about popular music. It's the culmination of over thirty years of dedicated research and scholarship by Michael Gray.

Inside these pages, you'll find a world of ideas, facts, and opinions. It's a world in which Baudelaire flows on from the Basement Tapes and A.S. Byatt looks out at the Byrds; in which Far from the Madding Crowd follows Ezekiel and Bob Geldof introduces Jean Genet; and in which Hank and William Carlos Williams stand side by side while J.R.R. Tolkien trails the Titanic. Most of all, of course, it's a world in which everyone and everything interconnects, in endlessly fascinating ways, with one of our greatest living artists: Bob Dylan."

Bob Dylan - Bob Dylan (1962)

The Other Side of the Mirror: Bob Dylan at the Newport Folk Festival (2007)

Director:
Murray Lerner

"For any Bob Dylan fan this is a must. One gets to see his progression from the new darling of the folk scene (elevated to the point of ultimate pretension by the line "He has his finger on the pulse of a generation") to breaking out the electric guitar for Maggie's Farm in 1965. It definitely helps to know what the circumstances were with Dylan's presence at the Newport Folk Festival over those three years when watching the film; if you go into it expecting the director Murray Lerner to spoon-feed multitudes of facts then you're bound to be let down. Only Joan Baez has a scene with some comments on Bob Dylan at the festival - the rest is just concert footage, with some sporadic bits for the announcer and shots and sounds of the audience or Dylan in a car surrounded by fans.

As for the songs themselves, they are what they are: it's Dylan in both his prime as a strong storyteller and folk singer and as a burgeoning rock star that got a lot of "pure" fans very angry. The argument can be made both ways with 1965: taken out of context the performance of Maggie's Farm is one of the most highly charged live rock songs ever recorded, taken in context it wasn't exactly the right time with such a picky crowd. It took guts on Dylan's end though, which is something that does come through consistently in the documentary. I mean this by what he sings about: his range is incredible when it comes to writing lyrics and relaying his stories and ideas, from Medgar Evers to his World War 3 Dream to Blowin' in the Wind, and then on to something traditional but powerful like Chimes of Freedom... leading all the way up to what many consider his masterpiece, Like a Rolling Stone. If nothing else, the performances are essential, even if the film overall works better alongside Scorsese's No Direction Home, which is, of course, the definitive Dylan doc."

Bob Dylan - The Other Side Of The Mirror (2007)

Par pesama odavde možete naći i u video verziji u dokumentarcu Festival (1967).

"Matched only by the Beatles and Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan continues to captivate music and pop culture fans with a seemingly never-ending stream of new and old recordings, books, documentaries, feature films, and more. The Other Side of the Mirror - Live at Newport Folk Festival 1963-1965 is a worthy addition to the canon; whether this 83-minute compilation will serve to illuminate the Dylan myth or merely perpetuate it is open to question, but without a doubt there's plenty of fascinating material here. There are nearly 20 songs represented, covering three consecutive years of Dylan appearances at the famed Rhode Island festival. Some are from Dylan's daytime "workshops," others from his nighttime main stage performances. Some are complete, others oddly truncated. Some are terrific (like "Chimes of Freedom," 1964), others not so much (cf. the turgid "With God on Our Side" from '63, with Joan Baez adding shrill harmony). In any case, these were the years when Dylan assumed the mantle of "spokesman of a generation," whether he wanted it or not. We hear him evolving from the earnest young protest singer of '63 to the visionary artist of the following year who, with the astonishing torrent of rhymes, alliterations, symbols, and brilliant turns of phrase in "Chimes" and "Mr. Tambourine Man," turned the whole notion of songwriting on its ear. And, of course, we also hear Dylan's turn from acoustic to electric guitar, when he was joined onstage by members of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band (sans Butterfield himself) in 1965; only two songs from that legendary (and, at the time, infamous) gig are heard here, and four decades after the fact, neither "Maggie's Farm" nor "Like a Rolling Stone" is all that special, notwithstanding some searing solo work by guitarist Mike Bloomfield. This has to rank as a must-have for Dylanologists of every stripe."

Festival (1967)

Director:
Murray Lerner

Izdvojio bih samo par najjačih momenata, npr. kada 'Peter, Paul and Mary' izvode Dylanovu vanvremensku "The Times They Are a-Changin" gde Mary briljira, zapravo uopšte njen nastup ima neku svoju specifičnu draž, pa onda Joan Baez i Peter Yarrow sa "Go Tell Aunt Rhody" Woody Guthriea, gde Baezova baca par prejakih prijava, skroz onako spontano, kako samo ona to ume.

(97 min)

"Festival is sadly among the missing documents of an era in popular music that continues to fascinate. After a brief theatrical run in 1967, the film continued to show up at repertory theaters through the next decade. But with the advent of home video, problems with wider distribution arose, due to clearing music performance rights. Thus, any opportunity to see this film should be taken. Director Murray Lerner hung out at four Newport Folk Festivals (1963-1966), recording performances, interviews, and crowd shots. Editing all of this footage into less than 100 minutes of film inevitably meant compromises; there are no complete performances, the interviews are brief. But the feeling for an era remains, and the most electric moment (literally) involves that famous (or infamous) 1965 performance by Bob Dylan, when he plugged in his guitar and played with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Among the highlights are several involving veteran bluesmen like Son House breaking through to a mostly white, college-age crowd."

Don't Look Back (1967)

Director:
D.A. Pennebaker

(96 min)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061589/

"Portrait of the artist as a young man. In spring, 1965, Bob Dylan, 23, a pixyish troubador, spends three weeks in England. Pennebaker's camera follows him from airport to hall, from hotel room to public house, from conversation to concert. Joan Baez and Donovan, among others, are on hand. It's the period when Dylan is shifting from acoustic to electric, a transition that not all fans, including Baez, applaud. From the opening sequence of Dylan holding up words to the soundtrack's "Subterranean Homesick Blues," Dylan is playful and enigmatic."

Dylan's Folk - the Pure, the Bad and the Holy (2007)

No dobro, to su sad neki moji lični tripovi.

Dalje, tu je i praotac protestnih pesama Pete Seeger koga najpre znamo kao autora vanvremenske pesme "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" koju je prva izvodila Marlene Dietrich na francuskom i nemačkom, i podarila joj svetsku slavu. Toliko, hvala. (40 min)

"Documentary about the American folk revival, the milieu from which the nascent Bob Dylan emerged in the early 1960s and whose crucible was the Newport folk festival. In 1963 it provided the perfect platform for Dylan, under the patronage of Pete Seeger and Joan Baez, to be acknowledged as the principal voice of folk music at the age of just 22. Other stars of the time such as Baez, Seeger, Peter Paul and Mary, Judy Collins, Muddy Waters and Mahalia Jackson are also featured."

No Direction Home: Bob Dylan (2005)

Director:
Martin Scorsese

Odlichan dokumentarac Martina Scorsezea o meni omiljenim ranim radovima Boba Dylana dok je bio klinac - folk genije, pure i clean skroz i nije imao rok bend iza sebe i tripovo svashta. Znachi chista akustika, milina jedna. E to je za mene chist pank : pesme poput Blowin' in the wind, Hard rain, Mr. Tambourin Man, Only a Pawn in their game, The times are changin', Masters of war itd. Awesome.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0367555/

No Direction Home is a documentary film by Martin Scorsese that traces the life of Bob Dylan, and his impact on American popular music and culture of the 20th century. The film does not cover Dylan’s entire career; rather, it focuses on his beginnings, his rise to fame in the 1960s, his transformation from an acoustic guitar-based musician and performer to an electric guitar-influenced sound and his “retirement” from touring in 1966 following an infamous motorcycle accident. The film was first presented on television in both the United States (as part of the PBS American Masters series) and the United Kingdom (as part of the BBC Two Arena series) on September 26–27 2005. A DVD version of the film and accompanying soundtrack album (The Bootleg Series Vol. 7: No Direction Home: The Soundtrack) were released that same month.

The project eventually titled as No Direction Home began to take shape in 1995 when Dylan’s manager, Jeff Rosen, began scheduling interviews with Dylan’s friends and associates. Among those interviewed were poet Allen Ginsberg and folk musician Dave Van Ronk, both of whom died before the film was ever completed. Dylan’s old girlfriend Suze Rotolo also granted a rare interview, and she later told Rolling Stone Magazine that she was very pleased with the project’s results. Dylan himself also sat for ten hours in a relaxed and open conversation with Rosen in 2000.

According to Rolling Stone magazine, an unnamed source close to the project claimed that Dylan himself had no involvement with the project apart from the interview, saying that “[Dylan] has no interest in this . . . Bob truly does not look back.” However, work on the first installment of Dylan’s autobiography, Chronicles, Vol. 1, did overlap production of the project, though it’s unclear how much, if any, influence Chronicles may have had on No Direction Home.

Though raw material was being gathered for the project, Rosen needed someone to edit and shape it into a quality picture, and celebrated filmmaker Martin Scorsese was approached to ‘direct’ the documentary planned from the project. Scorsese eventually agreed and came aboard in 2001.

In the meantime, Dylan’s office gathered hundreds of hours of historical film footage dating from the time covered in No Direction Home. These included a scratchy recording of Dylan’s high school rock band, his 1965 screen test for Andy Warhol, and newly-discovered footage of the famous Manchester Free Trade Hall concert from May 17, 1966, when an angry fan John Cordwell, called out “Judas!” just before Dylan and the Hawks performed “Like A Rolling Stone.” Shot by D.A. Pennebaker, the onstage, color footage was found in 2004 in a pile of water-damaged film recovered from Dylan’s vaults.

No Direction Home received a Peabody Award in 2006, and a Columbia-duPont Award in January 2007.
