"To the surprise of a whole world, the ex-Yugoslavian now Slovenian cult band Laibach became the first rock group ever invited to perform in the dictatorially repressed state of North Korea. Under the firm guidance of an old fan turned director and cultural diplomat, Laibach must deal with strict ideology, cultural differences and many technological difficulties in order just to perform. Struggling to get their songs through rigorous censorship, they race against the clock so they can be unleashed on an audience never before exposed to alternative rock'n'roll."
"Topical documentary by Saso Podgorsek about the provocative Slovenian avantgarde band, discussing issues such as war, terror, globalization and liberty."
"Laibach is a Slovenian avant-garde music group, strongly associated with industrial, martial, and neo-classical musical styles. Laibach formed June 1, 1980 in Trbovlje, Slovenia (then Yugoslavia). Laibach represents the music wing of the Neue Slowenische Kunst (NSK) art collective, of which it was a founding member in 1984. The name "Laibach" is the German name for Slovenia's capital city, Ljubljana. In the light of A Film About WAT, Laibach's role as music makers seems secondary. On Drzava - an early black-and-white clip that looks like a Leni Riefenstahl Super 8 movie, the stuttering electro-trumpets and thudding industrial beats put them right there with then-contemporaries like 23 Skidoo. Wirtschaft ist Tot, recorded six years later, shows their acknowledged musical affinity with Germany's DAF and Kraftwerk, and game for a laugh as ever (though only once on the DVD does a Laibach member crack a half-smirk), they go robotic."
"Divided States Of America, directed by award winning Slovenian film maker Sašo Podgoršek, is a unique document of Laibach’s US tour, set during the traumatic 2004 post-election atmosphere in a country deeply divided by two opposite political and cultural poles. Laibach conducted its first tour of North America in 1989, two years before the disintegration of its mother country, Yugoslavia. It was called "Sympathy for the Devil Tour" and was followed by two further tours in 1992 and 1997. In 2001 came the attack on WTC, then followed the avenging wars on Afghanistan and Iraq, and the universal offensive against terrorism, events which radically marked the new millennium - but also tightened the doors to the USA for many foreigners. Despite that, in election year 2004, in a tensely divided atmosphere between President Bush and Democratic candidate Kerry, Laibach successfully slipped again into the country to carry out their latest 15-concert North American tour. The first stop was in Washington, D.C., only a gunshot from the White House and only one day after the election results had been announced. In the air was a feeling of uneasiness, dark clouds covered the sky and rain fell all day..."
"A Film from Slovenia provides insight into the enigma of Laibach. Laibach describe their work in their own words; giving a sense of their music, their drama, and their irony, as well as a glimpse of the Eastern European and Slovenian influences that created the band. Directed by Daniel Landin and Peter Vezjak, A Film from Slovenia was written by Chris Bohn and was originally made for Slovenian TV and Mute Film in 1993. The band offer a new sound to several classics from The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Among the 17 renditions included in the film are Across the Universe, Sympathy for the Devil, Kinderreich, Fiat, The Great Seal." (59 min)
Skroz bre zanimljivo.
Entering the NSK state, the “state in time”... NSK Passport Control
Learn to predict a fire with unerring precision. Then burn down the building to fulfill the prediction. -- Czeslaw Milosz, Child of Europe (credit model with KUM tower)
Until 1991 the Western republic of Socialist Yugoslavia, Slovenia's violent secession struck the first spark in the Balkan war which defined the first chapter of the post-cold war era. Using an inventive combination of reportage, dramatization, archival footage, animation and miniatures, Predictions of Fire is a revealing study of the controversial and internationally acclaimed Slovenian arts collective NSK, as seen through the lens of 20th century Central European history. Shot in Ljubljana, Moscow, New York, Belgrade, and Athens, this visually arresting film offers a portrait of a culture suspended between East and West. By documenting NSK, Predictions of Fire holds a mirror up to Europe and the world, analyzing the way nations are brought into conformity with ideology.
There is no document of human civilizationwhich is not at the same time a document of barbarism.
-- Walter Benjamin
(the object corridor)
The film won the Canadian Film Board's Best Documentary award at the 1996 Vancouver International Film Festival. The jury issued a statement: "Predictions of Fire is intellectual dynamite. It explodes the icons and myths of communism and capitalism. Out of the shattered history of Slovenia, this film constructs a new way of looking at art, politics, and religion."
The suprematist square and the forms proceeding out of it can be likened to the primitive marks (symbols) of aboriginal man which represented, in their combinations, not ornaments but a feeling of rhythm.
--- Kazimir Malevich ("Entartete Welt" in Congress Square, Ljubljana)
In the early 80's, an industrial rock band named Laibach emerged out of the tiny Yugoslav republic of Slovenia. Incorporating what many took to be fascist imagery in their performances, they shocked this tiny Balkan republic and, after signing a recording contract with London's prestigious Mute Records label, went on to shock the rest of the world as well. Laibach was soon joined by a painting group, Irwin, and theater group, Red Pilot, at the helm of one of the most ambitious and cutting-edge arts collectives in the world. Modeled after a socialist state bureaucracy, and calling themselves Neue Slowenische Kunst (New Slovenian Arts, or NSK), these three groups became the titular heads of a micro-state within the independent republic of Slovenia. NSK recently began issuing its own passports and opened embassies and consulates in Moscow, Berlin, Ghent, Florence, and in the US.
"“This is the Black Square on Red Square!”" (Joint “Action” by Irwin and Kinetikon Pictures, Moscow, June 6 1992.
The 30-minute Action consisted of unfolding a 22 x 22 meter square of black fabric in the central part of Red Square).
Although Predictions of Fire documents the NSK collective, positioning their work within the history of ex-Yugoslavia, the film emerges as much more than an arts documentary. Predictions of Fire offers surprising insight into the Yugoslav conflict and the ongoing trauma experienced by generations of Eastern Europeans raised in totalitarian regimes. Variety wrote that the film "uses a postmodern, quasi-Godardian sensibility to show how politics invades every facet of artistic creation and how integral ideology is to the understanding of the structure and signification of images... An extremely rich tapestry of historical events and their mythic implications in both art and politics unfolds onscreen."
“"Tribes of Europe! The ground is ready!"” (Speech by the NSK Department of Pure and Applied Philosophy)
"This film is about great Slovenian band Laibach (german word for Ljubljana, Slovenia). It depicts in pure "laibachian" style history of the group according to conditions of Slovenian history and political situation on the beginning of the 80's. This film can be taken as a visual manifesto of retrogardist cultural movement called NSK (Neue slowenische Kunst - New Slovenian Art) presented here by Laibach.NSK is dealing with totalitarian principles of creating visual or performing art, but in these Slovenian guys living on the edge of germanic and slavonic cultures use a lot of humour, which can sometimes look little bit inappropriate, but really works."
